This blog is all about Plants4Presents ‘Grow Your Own Curry’ display that we are preparing for the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in July 2012. It will take a look behind the scenes as our display progresses and follow the trials and tribulations of growing chillies and herbs for curries both at home and for display. Alongside regular progress reports on the display itself we intend to include a whole range of curry related articles, growing sheets, top tips and recipes. We hope you enjoy reading our posts and please do get in touch if you have any questions on chillies, ginger, turmeric or indeed any other curry related herbs and spices.
Plants4Presents sell plants online as gifts and deliver all over the UK. Our aim is always to sell interesting plants that we would like to receive ourselves. Over time our range of citrus trees, flowering plants, climbers and chilli plants has slowly expanded to include lots of other edible plants including cumin, turmeric, ginger and anything else that takes our fancy.
Over the years we have learnt stacks about growing chillies and other edibles. We love growing new varieties and of course cooking with the end result. This blog is centred around the ‘Grow Your Own Curry’ display we are putting together for Hampton Court and will start with the early idea, through growing the plants, preparing the stand and of course the final result and visitors feedback.
Our Display for Hampton Court
Preparing the displays is a big project for us and with a stand in both the Plant Village and in the Growing Tastes marquee we have had our work cut out this year. Planning for 2012 started for us as soon as we got back from Hampton court last year with the planting starting in earnest from the beginning of January. We grow 3 times as many plants as needed for each display to allow for losses and selection of the best plants and it’s a nerve racking business feeding up and coddling the tropical rhizomes over the winter months in order to get them big enough for the displays in July.
This year we wanted to get more of our nursery staff involved and the ‘Grow your own Curry’ theme was put forward by Lee one of our nursery managers who is a big curry fan! We’ve been growing chillies, kaffir limes, ginger, turmeric and herbs for many years but it’s always fun to experiment with new plants and we’re excited about the Cardamom and Curry Leaf plants we’ll be showcasing this year. Because it’s such a big project everyone at the Plants4Presents nursery gets involved, from sowing the seeds and rhizomes to painting the plant troughs and weaving the living willow structures. Even before the onsite build begins we’ll have racked a couple of hundred man (and woman!) hours in the nursery in growing the display plants and of course the plants for sale.
Please do buy your ticket from the RHS and come visit us at Hampton Court this year . We’re in the Edible Tastes Marquee stand GYO/8 we’d love to see lots of fellow curry fiends there!
